If we expect food to be delicious, shouldn't the restaurant where it’s served also be tastefully designed? This holds particularly true when the restaurant’s very name, Umami, signifies “a savoury taste” in Japanese.
The design of the new Umami restaurant draws inspiration from engaging all five senses, guided by the slogan "Feed your curiosity." Our mission was to craft a space that encourages exploration, aligning with the owner's philosophy that each dish can be a unique and novel experience through the exploration of different combinations of spices and sauces.
This creative design concept is aptly named the “Creative Lab,” serving as both the inspiration for the design and the blueprint for how the space will be utilised. Upon entering the restaurant, the first feature is the network of pipes zigzagging across the ceilings, painted in vibrant colours. These colours are echoed throughout various details, including the chairs and shelves.
The fixtures have been intentionally left visible to create a sense of openness, a concept further enhanced by the open kitchen where guests can observe the preparation of their meals. A somewhat unexpected feature within the space is the interactive wall adorned with an array of spice boxes for guests to experiment with, along with an assortment of trinkets like board games, adding to the overall sensory experience.
